Many single people dread the holiday season. Why? It’s supposed to be the most joyful time of the year!

For many of us, it’s truly the most dreadful time of the year unless you have an active support system, family and friends to help get you through it. I get it, it’s incomprehensible that you can’t be over the moon happy about the festivities and love, right? Wrong.

I’ll use myself as an example. I’m not from this area. My closest living relative is in London and perhaps maybe in Spain for the holidays. While I’ve developed a network of support and love here, many of those delicious people simply don’t think about asking the single girl to their family festivities because, hmmm, well, she may stand out like a sore thumb, may not assimilate to the chaos or dysfunction of my family and a hundred other reasons. And these hundred other reasons keep us single people, who would LOVE to be included, alone in our homes during the holidays.

Personally, I like to think of the holidays as a time I can give back to my community. I volunteer to serve meals or do service of some kind. I’m happy to deliver meals to those who don’t drive or offer a smile to someone who needs mine. But, with all that goodness, also comes loneliness when all I’d really love to have is a simple invitation to your home. At least let me reject it if it doesn’t feel right.

Some great reasons to invite a single person to your holiday festivities are:

  1. They can take pictures of the entire family so no one is left out of the photo.
  2. They generally help with the dishes and serving because it’s awkward to be around family and not have the bond, so many of us shift into service and helping mode.
  3. We bring some new stories so we don’t have to listen to the dreaded Aunt Hazel’s annual rendition of how she climbed Mount Everest.
  4. We listen and observe and don’t need to be the center of attention. And heck, Uncle Jerry may know someone for us!
  5. We may bring EPIC side dishes or liquor to the party. Nothing wrong with that, right?

So, next holiday, or the one coming up, think about those outside of your family, and get the invitations out early to that sassy single person!
