Stretched out and finally snapped, Union Grove put just enough pressure on Waterford to earn a 27-7 victory on September 10 in Wisconsin football.
“Defensively, we did a really good job as our defense played great,” Union Grove head coach Craig McClelland said. “I thought Waterford did a really good job stacking the box and taking away what we do well.”
After a Waterford turnover on the first offensive play of the ball game, Union Grove running back Cody Cotton scored from one yard out on a two play drive to give the Broncos a 6-0 lead.
“Always when a team turns the ball over, you want to capitalize and get points somehow,” McClelland said. “It was cool that it happened that quick for us.”
With 7:24 remaining in the second quarter, Cotton added on his second touchdown run from seven yards out to grab a 13-0 lead before Waterford capped off a 15 play drive with a one yard touchdown run from Carson Bilitz to make it 13-7 at the half.
“Having one good drive per game isn’t going to do you any good,” Waterford head coach Adam Bakken said. “We proven we can do it, but we got to find a way to not make mistakes once we get fatigued.”
After a heavy dose of the running game from Cotton, Parker Griffith capped off Union Grove’s first drive of the second half with a three yard touchdown run to make it 20-7. Early in the fourth quarter, the Broncos added on their final score of the game with a six yard touchdown run by quarterback Nate Williams.
“We wanted to reestablish the run because they did a really good job of taking it away,” McClelland said of the first drive of the second half. “Having that long drive and sustaining it is kind of our identity this year. Coming away with points out of the half is big for us.”
Cotton led the Union Grove rushing attack with 155 yards on 27 carries with two touchdown runs. Parker Peterson was the leading rusher for Waterford with 65 yards on 16 carries.
“Cody is electric and everybody holds there breath because it could be a touchdown at any moment,” McClelland said of Cotton. “You always got to give credit to our offensive line, fullbacks and tight ends because they give him the ability to get those long runs, sustain those long drives and give him those many carries.”
Union Grove goes to 4-0 on the season, while Waterford goes to 1-3. Union Grove takes on Burlington on the road, while Waterford hosts Wilmot next week.
