In a battle of undefeated teams, Franklin’s Myles Burkett continued to prove why he is a Wisconsin commit as he added two more touchdown passes in Franklin’s 34-14 rivalry win over Oak Creek on Friday night.
“Myles is a Big Ten quarterback, and he can spin the ball as well as anyone we have ever had,” Franklin head coach Louis Brown said. “He’s got two running backs behind him and receivers that can move and run. He better do well with the weapons and skills that he has.”
Two plays into the game offensively, Burkett connected with Reece Osgood on a 66-yard touchdown pass to grab the early 7-0 lead. On the next possession, Oak Creek quarterback Cade Palkowski capped off a 12 play drive for the Knights with a 11-yard touchdown pass to Cole Rodriguez to tie the game.
After a Burkett incompletion that led to a turnover on downs, Oak Creek grabbed their only lead of the game with an one yard touchdown run from Palkowski to grab a 14-7 lead.
With 3:56 to go in the first half, Tanner Rivard ran in the equalizer with an one yard touchdown run of his own. After a turnover on downs from Oak Creek, Burkett and Osgood connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass to grab a 21-14 halftime lead.
“We were going to go for it because we weren’t going to sit back and punt when we knew that when they had the ball that they could score quite often,” Oak Creek head coach Joel Paar said. “That stop right before the half was a big one because that allowed them to score right behind that and took some momentum towards them.”
After a defensive stop on fourth down to start the second half, Franklin added onto their lead with a five play drive resulting in a three yard touchdown run from Burkett. With 4:51 to go in the fourth quarter, Rivard added a 39-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring.
“They (Oak Creek) took care of the football the whole game,” Brown said. “We were hoping we could of caused a few turnovers, but their sophomore quarterback did a nice job and had some nice throws. He had the one bad throw at the end, but other than that he was on.”
Burkett went 15-for-21 for 270 yards in the win connecting with Reece Osgood and Keaton Arendt on nine of those completions. Osgood led the Sabers in receiving with five receptions for 114, while Rivard led the team in rushing with 12 carries for 75 yards.
Palkowski went 18-for-24 in the game for 173 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Brandon Piche led in the rushing attack for Oak Creek with 44 yards on 11 carries. Steven Piontek led in receiving with seven catches, while Joey Flaherty led in receiving yardage with 86.
The Sabers become the lone team in the Southeast Conference with their seventh win of the season. Franklin takes on Kenosha Tremper next week at home, while Oak Creek plays on the road against Racine Case.
