Police say a confidential informant on multiple dates purchased heroin laced with fentanyl near Jefferson Lighthouse Elementary School from a Racine man with a history of drug charges.

According to the criminal complaint, Gregory L. Wells conducted a number of drug transactions in a vehicle parked in the 1500 block of Winslow Street. On three different occasions in June and July 2021, a confidential informant obtained cash in amounts of $100 or $150 from Racine police and arranged meetings with Wells to purchase heroin. After the CI returned the drugs they bought to officers, police tested the substance and received results of heroin with the presence of fentanyl.

Wells was charged in Racine County Circuit Court on Tuesday with three felony counts of possession with the intent to deliver near a school and three counts of maintaining a drug trafficking place. All six counts are flagged as repeat offenses because Wells has prior convictions for both. If convicted of all charges, Wells faces up to 55 years in prison and/or up to $180,000 in fines.

He will next be in court for his preliminary hearing on April 14.
