The Santa in a Shoebox elves are busy delivering sleighfuls of holiday happiness, rushing to get every package into the hands of kids, adults, and veterans throughout Racine County.

Diana Anderson Higgenbottom, founder of SIS in Racine, said 476 boxes had gone out as of Friday evening, and her army of volunteers were loaded up for Saturday trips as well.

“Day-by-day, sleighful-by-sleighful, the presents will be delivered by Christmas,” she said with a laugh.

While it’s too soon to tell if Santa in a Shoebox in 2014 will surpass the 800 boxes donated and distributed in 2013, Higgenbottom said SIS boxes will go to more places than past years.

“We were able to bless so many different agencies this year,” she said. “We did research and some marketing and it is expanding, maybe not in ‘numbers’ but in who receives them. It’s like sprinkling shoeboxes all over Racine.”
