State Rep. Tom Weatherston’s wife, April, passed away Sunday after a short battle with an acute form of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell.
She was being treated in the intensive care unit at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa and as recently as Jan. 14 said she intended to stay in the race for incumbent Ed Willing’s Caledonia trustee seat.
Tom had been keeping family and friends updated on Facebook with news of April’s treatment, and on Sunday morning posted that she was alert and feeling feisty with the number of medical interns who asked her the same questions over and over again.
“She is off the respirator this morning and very alert and feisty. She can’t talk which is OK with me,” he wrote early Sunday morning. “As this is a teaching hospital and her disease is so rare, every intern has stopped by. It’s starting to piss her off. Not the visits, they all ask the same questions.”
A few hours later, April had passed away.
The reaction on Facebook was swift, supportive and full of thoughts and prayers, including from Willing.
“April was the sweetest woman, always soft spoken and kind. She was part of the local political and social community that will not be forgotten. My heart goes out to Rep Weatherston, who spent the last moments with the love of his life on a peaceful Sunday afternoon. Without doubt, Tom loved April and this unexpected change makes us all take life into account. I will hold closer the ones I love, and his family does the same,” he told Racine County Eye in an email.
“Prayers for your family at this sad, sad time. May your hearts be touched and comforted,” Tiffany Koehler wrote.
“Tom, I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your wife. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,” John Hiller posted.
