A Racine man beat his fiancé with a mirror and set fire to her bedroom after another man was “showing her attention” at a bar on Lathrop Avenue.

Bryan J. Velasco, 27, was at Joey’s, 2054 Lathrop Ave., with his fiancé Sunday when he almost got into a fight at the bar because another man was “showing her attention,” the woman told police.

Later that night, he showed up to her house, according to a criminal complaint, and threatened to kill her. He threw a stool at her, which struck her in the face, Velasco then hit her on the head with a mirror three times causing it to shatter over her.

The woman was able to escape. When police found her, she was bleeding cuts all over her hands and legs.

Investigators found fire damage all over the apartment with the most of it in the bedroom. Velasco told police he set down a burning joint and went outside to smoke a cigarette, and when he came back the bedroom was, “engulfed in flames.”

Velasco was charged with violating a foreign protection order because the woman had a restraining order against her out of California. He was also charged with misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct and felony domestic abuse assessments.
