The Just Budget Unity Tour

May 6 @ 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Racine Coalition for Peace and Justice, Voces de la Frontera, the Racine Interfaith Coalition, and many other social justice organizations are uniting to ensure that the Wisconsin state budget adequately addresses the needs of all WI residents. Your voice can be heard at the upcoming Just Budget Unity Tour on Friday, May 7, from 5:20 p.m. to 6:05 p.m. at the Cezar Chavez Center, 2221 Douglas Avenue.

Wisconsin legislators will soon pass a budget for spending our tax dollars in the next two years. To bring attention to the importance of a Just budget, the Just Budget Unity Tour is stopping at 12 of the 16 districts around the state with members in the Joint Finance Committee. Therefore, Racine is one of the stops on the tour.

Event speakers:

  • Corey Mason–Mayor
  • Fabi Maldonado–County Supervisor
  • Justin Blake–Community Activist and member of the Wisconsin 7
  • Angelina Cruz–President Racine Educators’ Association
  • John Bush–Student Activist
  • Nikki Fisher–Fair Maps Coalition
  • Greta Neubauer–State Representative and others.

The MC will be Pastor Jonathan Barker of Grace Lutheran Church, Kenosha, a member of the Wisconsin 7. Further, the event will start with a reading by Nick Ramsey of the poem he wrote for this event!

More about the Just Budget Unity Tour

On Friday, May 7th and Saturday, May 8th, in communities all across WI, pro-justice and democracy groups will hold press conferences and public hearings about the dire need for justice in Wisconsin’s state budget. Further, these outdoor and safely-distanced events are planned for all 16 districts represented by the Joint Finance Committee members.

The 12 events will be part of a two-day caravan that will cover over 500 miles, led by the “UnityMobile.” This caravan will be joined by Pastor Jonathan Barker, author of “Jesus Would Demand a Green New Deal.” He is also one of the Wisconsin Seven who just ended a 22-day water-only fast for Climate Justice in the state budget.

“Day One” includes stops in Middleton, Dodgeville, Beloit, Elkhorn, Oak Creek, and Racine. It will conclude with a virtual film showing via Zoom. In addition, participants of this virtual gathering will get to see videos produced by the Just Budget Video Project, along with footage from the day’s events. “Day Two” includes events in Milwaukee, Cedarburg, Brookfield, Beaver Dam, Portage, and Madison.

The Coalition for a Just WI Budget

The Coalition for a Just WI Budget and partners hope that this statewide demonstration of unity will inspire others to ask what they can do to make their voices heard for justice during this budget season?

We hope to raise public awareness of the many severe crises that are affecting so many of us. People in Wisconsin are hurting, and the future is not looking so bright for our future generations. It’s time to care for each other and our planet home. Expanding Medicaid will save Wisconsin roughly $1.6 billion and ensure over 90,000 more people have health coverage. Legalizing marijuana will increase tax revenue, employment, and economic development while reducing crime and our mass incarceration problem. Investing in clean water, energy conservation, and green jobs are investments that our children need today. Finally, it is time to end the tax breaks to the wealthiest and fund equity in our schools and all communities.
