Mount Pleasant police say a woman was driving drunk early Saturday morning when she veered off southbound Highway 32, across the northbound lanes of traffic and crashed almost completely through a garage in the Lake Park neighborhood.

The 23-year-old female driver was cited for a first offense operating while intoxicated; eighth offense driving with a suspended license; one count of reckless driving; and one count of driving without insurance.

According to a press release from MPPD Sgt. Paul Maccari, the woman was traveling south on Highway 32 around 6:15 a.m. Saturday when she lost control of her car. She veered across the northbound lanes, taking out a highway sign at the base, across the ditch, through a wooden fence and then a chain-link fence before plowing through the garage of a home in the 1600 block of Richard Avenue and coming to rest with part of the car coming through the opposite wall of the structure.

Despite her wild ride, the woman only suffered facial injuries and lacerations. She was taken to the hospital by South Shore Fire Department for treatment of her injuries.

No one was injured in the accident, but the integrity of the garage was severely compromised, the statement from Maccari reads.
