McKinley Middle Charter School 8th grader Eris Fletcher has a passion for helping people, and she is putting her compassion to work as part of a class project.
Fletcher and a couple of friends baked dozens of cookies to sell to shoppers at Malicki’s Piggly Wiggly on Washington Avenue to raise money for HALO (Homeless Assistance Leadership Organization).
“I chose HALO because I like working with kids, and I like volunteering,” she said.
Fletcher started volunteering when she was just in fourth grade, first for Bethany House women’s shelter and the Eco-Justice Center.
She plans to be a teacher when she grows up and to continue to make time for volunteering.
Fletcher and her HALO table will be at Piggly Wiggly, 5201 Washington Avenue, Thursday afternoon after school until 6 p.m. and again Friday until 6:30 p.m.
