Longtime and beloved boys basketball coach Bob Letsch is retiring from St. Catherine’s after more than 50 years.

Letsch told The Journal Times that he’s spent 55 of his 72 years at St. Cat’s, and he’s retiring now because he can’t be the kind of coach his students deserve.

“I can’t coach the way I want to coach. I want to be on the court, I want to be doing the drills and I don’t feel comfortable doing that anymore,” he is quoted as saying.

Letsch coached the boys team for over 35 years and in 2014 survived being fired when the St. Cat’s community – past and present students and families – rallied behind him. He was reinstated just four days later.

His overall record is 661-250, the second winningest boys basketball in the state.
