A Waukegan man was charged with possession of heroin after police set up a controlled heroin buy for what they thought was a large amount of heroin at a motel.

Jerald D. Hodges, 25, went to the Seeker Motel, 1700 Durand Ave., Friday. When he knocked on the door a police officer opened and grabbed him by the arm and detained him, according to a criminal complaint written by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

Hodges made comments about knowing it was a set-up and told officers he had no contraband. Officers held Hodges as they had a k-9 unit sniff around his vehicle which was still running. They found a bag of heroin inside the gas tank door of Hodges’s vehicle weighing 26.5 grams.

The amount of drugs the man had amounted to the size of a golf ball. Hodges told the officers he was “just a middle man.”

The 26 grams of heroin has a street value of more than $2,600. He is charged with possession with intent to deliver heroin.
