Racine police say a man and a woman are each charged with stealing cell phones, shampoo and laundry detergent from the Dollar General store on Washington Avenue.

Thomas Friso, 30, and Ericka Hansen, 34, both of Racine, were charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with one count each of misdemeanor retail theft. If convicted, they each face up to nine months in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines. Because both defendants are considered repeat offenders, they could get extra time added to any sentence they might receive.

According to the criminal complaint against them, a man and woman at 8:01 p.m. Jan. 15 were seen entering Dollar General, 4901 Washington Avenue, and going in separate directions. Employees told police they tried to keep an eye on both defendants as they moved through the store. They showed officers store surveillance video on which the man is seen taking pre-paid cell phones, and Hansen is seen hiding shampoo and laundry detergent in her purse.

Police say store employees did not see the man leave with the cell phones and believe he stuffed them in his pants. Both defendants exited the store without paying for the items they were seen taking off the shelves and got into a vehicle to leave the area.

Officers posted an internal bulletin asking for help identifying the man and the woman, the complaint reads, and police officers familiar with the couple identified them as Friso and Hansen.

Friso was given a $200 signature bond at his initial appearance and will next be in court Feb. 18 for a pre-trial conference. Hansen is also out of jail on a $200 signature bond. She will next be in court Feb. 25 for a pre-trial conference.
