The Racine County District Attorney’s Office has charged two Racine men with crimes related to the July 12 death of three-year-old Jere’Miah Pitt.

His father Jeffrey Pitt Jr., 30, and Laquan Lavonte Russell, 26, were charged following an investigation, according to a criminal complaint by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

Pitt Jr. initially told police he didn’t own a gun and there were no firearms in the house. But eventually he admitted to falling asleep on the living room floor with his sons that night with a .40 caliber pistol in his waistband and one round chambered.

He said he drank five shots of alcohol that night and that he woke up in the morning to find his son dead. Russell apparently found the gun and hid it for Pitt Jr. at some point in the night. Both men told police that Pitt Jr. asked Russell for the pistol to check and see if a round was missing, which it was.

Russell later hid the pistol for Pitt Jr. in an alley behind the house within the 1800 block of Howe Street.

Pitt Jr was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, first degree reckless homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety. Russell was charged with obstruction and harboring or aiding a felon.
