Elmwood Park trustees last week approved restrictions on where convicted sex offenders can live in the village, following the examples of neighbors like Mount Pleasant and the City of Racine.
Village President Ellis Steiner told The Journal Times that residents have been concerned, so the board moved forward with the ordinance after previous proposals were abandoned.
“Everybody is concerned in the village about sex offenders,” Steiner is quoted as saying during the board meeting. “We are doing what other municipalities have already done.”
In short, the new rules mean offenders are prohibited from living 750 feet from schools, parks, churches and the walking/bicycle trail that bisects the village, the story continues.
Offenders already living in the village will not be required to move.11
