Jazz musicians at William Horlick High School got lessons from a master Friday when Carl Allen paid them a visit and lead them through a number of exercises.

The Racine Unified website documented Allen’s time with students.

Allen is an internationally recognized drummer – Modern Drummer called him a “topflight jazz drummer” who got his start at 19 – who hails from Milwaukee. While he was at Horlick last week, he focused on technique and sound and encouraged students to keep practicing their craft.

“Every generation needs someone to help them get to the next level and this what I am hoping to do,” Allen told the district.

Allen has played with some of the biggest jazz legends in the world, including Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Allen was also on the faculty of the renowned Julliard School of Music from 2001 to 2014.
