To encourage people to shop local, the City of Racine and its parking app vendor have teamed up to take a little of the pain out of plugging the meter.

People shopping in Racine on each Saturday in December will be able to get up to four hours of free parking when they use the Passport pay by phone app to pay for their parking spaces.

Local businesses will offer patrons a special payment code to use. They will be available at retail and eating establishments. The code is good for up to $2.80 in free parking on each Saturday in December. The credit can be used at all metered spaces in the downtown, uptown, and west Racine streets, in lots and in the McMynn ramp on Main and 7th streets.

“The merchant validation will activate even if the parker has already begun a parking session. $2.80 will buy a single parking session for up to four hours of parking in a two-hour spot,” according to a press release by the City of Racine.

The City of Racine and Passport are sponsoring the promotion. It is intended to promote commercial areas in Racine and to try the new parking app.
