Friends and family members held a memorial Thursday, March 5 for Andrew Jones, a 27-year-old father of two boys that was shot to death on Monday by his friend, Jacob Rogers.

A crowd of people gathered to hear First Baptist Church of Racine Pastor Holley Anderson Anderle talk about Jones’ death. She said that nothing can make what happened to Jones OK.

“But think of one word that describes Drew, go ahead and shout it out,” she said.

Most people said: Kind… and goofy.

Another woman talked about Jones being full of life.

“If you ever got a hug from him…he gave the biggest bear hugs and it almost sucked the life out of you,” she said. “That’s just how much he loved everybody. If you know Drew… try to live your life and love one another like Drew loved all of us.

“Live for the good because life is too short,” she said. “I ask all of you to learn to love one another.”

Rogers and his girlfriend Katelyn McGraw let Jones stay with them after they lost custody of their newborn baby because she tested positive for drugs, according to Jones’ brother Latimar Jones. Jones was the godfather of the little girl.

Jones lived in Kenosha with Ginger Raymond, who attended the vigil. She said she begged Jones not to go to Rogers’ apartment the night before the shooting. But Jones told her that he had to go because Rogers had threatened to commit suicide.

“I  just had bad feelings about him coming here,” she said. “I know he’s with God, I know he’s in heaven. But I want him back. We all want him back. We  just can’t explain the pain…. it hurts. And it’s an emptiness that I hope we can all fill talking about Drew and laughing about Drew.”

“I loved him. And I will never forget that child.”

But what caused the disagreement is not yet clear.

Rogers told friends on Facebook Tuesday afternoon prior to him being taken into police custody that Jones had taken money from him. But Latimar said there are other rumors going around that caused a fight between the two men. Officials with the Racine Police Department have not confirmed these details.

Jacob Rogers, 27, was officially charged with 1st degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon. If convicted, he faces a life sentence for the homicide charge and an additional 10 years on the gun charge.

Another man, Jacob Albright, 27, of Racine, was also charged in connection with the shooting death of Andrew Lee Jones, 27, of Kenosha. Albright is facing up to 20 years in prison and/or up to $50,000 in fines for allegedly aiding/abetting a fugitive and possession of a firearm by a felon.
