Donate to our local news fund, help a nonprofit

We’re on a mission in 2022 to work on a year-long series about housing in Racine County and we need your help to fund it. For every $250 in donations that we receive, we’ll give a nonprofit one free month in advertising.

Following a gun battle at 412 9th St., a Racine man was arrested by officers with the Racine Police Department Tuesday for possessing a firearm.

Darius Harris, 26, admitted firing a pistol at an assailant in defense of himself and family members when an individual drove past and shot at him, according to a criminal complaint by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

Harris, who has a history felony charges against him from Illinois, admitted to purchasing the pistol for self-defense that morning, because the person that shot at him had threatened him, following him around and damaging his property.

Police found a .40 caliber hi-point handgun he used when video footage showed him handling a bag that was found to contain the pistol.

Harris was charged with possession of a firearm as a felon.
