Your first days at a new job can be nerve-wracking and overwhelming, and you don’t want to start your new career on the wrong foot. These tips for how to make a good first impression at work will help you curb those first-day jitters and show your new employers that you’re ready to shine in your new position.

Dress to impress

Dressing to impress during your first few days at a new job is always best, even in relaxed offices where the dress code is more casual. Ask about the office dress code prior to your first day and err on the side of caution when planning your outfit. Your clothing should make you appear polished and professional while allowing you to be comfortable and to show a bit of your personal style. Putting effort into your appearance is a subtle way to show your employer that you’ll also put effort into your new job.

Arrive early

Make a good first impression the moment you step in the door by arriving to work a few minutes early. This will show your new employer that you’re a go-getter and that you value the time of your coworkers. You should also pay attention to the company’s unspoken rules about punctuality. If most of your coworkers stay at the office later than 5 P.M., you might want to adopt this practice as well to show that you’re equally as dedicated as your more senior coworkers.

Have confidence

Feeling nervous about your first day at a new job is natural, and when it comes to confidence, it’s often easier to talk the talk than it is to walk the walk. If you start to feel nervous, take a breath and remember that you were hired because you have all the skills necessary to excel at this job. If this mini-meditation doesn’t do the trick, the best advice is to fake it until you make it. Pretend you’re confident, and eventually, you’ll begin to truly feel confident.

Ask questions

During your first few days at a new job, you’ll receive a lot of information, which can be a bit overwhelming. Do your best to take in as much information as you can, but don’t be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions will show your new employer that you care about doing a good job and that you’re ready to learn everything you can about the company and position.

Radiate positivity

One of the easiest ways to make a good first impression at work is to go into your first day with a positive mindset. Smiling at coworkers and making small talk may seem inconsequential, but it will help you get on your new coworkers’ good side in no time. Starting your new job with a positive outlook will also show your employers you’re happy to be there and excited to do some great work.
