Home furnishings consignment store Humble Home will close July 15 after five years on Main Street.
Owners and sisters Margie Kuzia and Kathy Kuzia along with Carrie Castillo made the announcement Saturday on the store’s Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that Humble Home will be closing July 15th,” the post reads. “We want to thank each and every one of you that have come in the store and supported us over the last 5 years!”
Reasons cited for the store closing include a prominent “for sale” sign for the building posted in one of the store’s windows – resulting in decreased sales by up to 50 percent – and reduced traffic during the spring when visitors and sales usually go up after the slow winter.
“(It) was a rough winter with few sales and lastly, May and June are normally great months (but) have been dismal,” the post continues. “There are just not the people coming downtown than there has been in the past.”
Reaction from neighbors, friends and customers was swift and sympathetic.
Mary Jerger-Osterman, owner of Copacetic, said, “Margie Kuzia Kathy Kuzia, Carrie Castillo you are a class act and a great neighbor to downtown Racine. I love each of you and wish you the best of peace and happiness in the next phase of the journey of life.”
Customer Aurora Reyes wrote, “It’s an awesome store and one of my reasons I came downtown as well … so sad but will be down there soon!“
The Humble Home Facebook page will remain active for a few months after the store closes, owners told shoppers, in order to share news.
Humble Home is located at 407 Main Street. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
