Spouse or partner’s name: Beth
Children’s names: Arik (23) and Alec (21)
What is your current profession? Retired
What position are you applying for? President Village of North Bay
What motivated you to seek out this seat? North Bay is a unique and wonderful community. I felt compelled to express my gratitude for living here through service.
Mark Schall talks about his agenda
Why do you think you are a good candidate for the job? In a 34-year career at S.C. Johnson, I had had many of the same responsibilities of the village president: strategic planning, managing budgets, leading projects, and working with vendors. I was successful by working hard and collaborating with others. I feel my greatest strength is team building which is critical to meeting the challenges ahead.
Name three things you would like to see change with how things are being done: The village board has been excellent caretakers of our village. If elected, I would:
- Continue to maintain the unique charm of North Bay
- Maintain or lower current tax burden
- Earn status as a National and State Registry of Historic Places
What resources would you need to have to accomplish that? The current village board has experienced and dedicated members. I will depend on their expertise to be successful if I am elected.
What would success look like and how would you measure that success? There are daunting challenges that require solutions, including lake erosion and infrastructure maintenance. Solutions require thorough investigation and planning. Exploring and sharing options, and gaining consensus on a multi-year plan would be a key milestone.
How would you seek buy-in from either the community and/or your colleagues to accomplish those tasks? Inclusion is critical to achieving buy-in. Communicating and soliciting feedback is imperative to inclusion. Everyone needs to feel their opinions are important and vital to the process.
What characteristics do you bring to the table to accomplish those tasks? My natural tendency in crises is collaboration. I believe there is not only strength in numbers but creativity and wisdom. In my professional career, my greatest talent was building teams and paving the way for the parts’ sum to exceed the whole. Secondarily, I am a detailed and tenacious planner. For me, it was truly joyful to create a phone book-size project plan and seeing it successfully executed.
