The vacant building inventory in Racine County will increase soon with the completion of a proposed 154,000 square foot spec building on Highway 20 in Mount Pleasant.

Opus Development and MLG Commercial will develop the project on about 10 acres just south of Washington Avenue east of I-94, a story in the Milwaukee Business Journal reads.. The east frontage road there would be the building’s primary access.

This is the same site where the $70 million relocation of Sysmex from Illinois was planned for early 2011, but that project fell through, the story reads.

Plans for the site actually call for two spec buildings of similar size. The second project would also take 10 acres on an adjoining parcel.

Vacant industrial buildings are in short supply in Racine County even with the new 374,000 square foot project from Ashley Capital in Sturtevant and the recently completed 120,000 square foot building at Highway 20 and International Drive in Mount Pleasant.

Both of those developments call for additional buildings, which would add well over a million square feet of leasable space for manufacturing, distribution and warehousing operations.

Logan Dawson of Racine County Economic Development Corporation told the Sturtevant Village Board recently that the number one challenge to attracting companies to the area is the lack of available buildings.
