Housing instability is more than just being homeless…
Housing instability in Racine is a significant problem. But it’s not just about being homeless. It’s having a landlord sell your house, living in a car, living in a motel, having a child test positive for lead poisoning, and water leaking into your home.
Rents are on the rise. But so is the cost of building a new home, fixing your current home, and coming up with a down payment to buy your first home. These are all issues that impact residents’ employability, their health, and our children’s education. What’s more, housing instability is strongly linked to increased crime.
Racine County Eye plans to spend a whole year looking at housing instability.
