I’ve been a journalist for 21 years and the owner of the Racine County Eye for eight years. We operate a sustainable news organization that employs three people and supports four other freelance writers. And COVID is already impacting our business again.
That’s why we also need the financial support of our readers so that we can keep the focus on journalism. It’s extremely important as we navigate these complex stories that take more time to write.
The story below is about the impact COVID-19 is having on our ability to provide health care as COVID-19 numbers skyrocket. I worked on the story below for an entire week. I focused on telling this story through multiple layers, including:
- Health information
- Employees at our local hospital
- A patient
- Testing and vaccine information
- Myths around the vaccine
These are elements that reflect the best practices established by the Society of Professional Journalism. Even more than that, this is journalism that helps our community.
