Nicholas “Nick” J. Bukacek, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday at his residence in De Soto, Wisconsin. Nick was born in Racine on September 16, 1959, and was the son of James and Bernice (Nee: Miller) Bukacek.
Nick was a graduate of St. Catherine’s High School “Class of 1977” and earned a Civil Engineering degree at Michigan Technological University in 1981. On August 22, 1981, he married the love of his life, Lynn A. McManus, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Even as a young man, Nick possessed a strong work ethic that began while working with his grandfather as a tuck pointer, and then later joining his Father in the family business, Bukacek Construction. Nick learned the business from the ground up, beginning as a carpenter’s apprentice, mason, and then later as a Professional Engineer. Upon assuming the company’s sales and marketing responsibilities, Nick lead the company from its modest roots to one of the premier commercial construction companies based in Racine. Nick’s vision and leadership have left a lasting impression on the Racine Community. In 2005, he stepped down as President and owner of Bukacek Construction and relocated to De Soto, Wisconsin. Never fully retiring, Nick later started Bukacek Engineering and Excavating Company based in De Soto.
During his tenure in Racine, Nick was actively involved in the community and served in various capacities including RAMAC, The Prairie School, RASA, St. Rita’s Parish, and Tri-County Contractors Association. He was an advocate for the growth and expansion of the Racine community, both professionally, and more personally, as a civic leader. The last decade of his life was spent in De Soto where Nick quietly enjoyed his hobbies hunting and fishing and served as a community volunteer. In De Soto, he developed many close friends and built his “dream home” which became his families retreat, and central gathering spot for his children and grand-children. The De Soto home was Nick’s college vision of a “self-sustaining home” that he proudly brought to life, earning numerous professional acclamations. Nick also enjoyed tennis, golfing, biking, skiing, snow-shoeing, architecture, history, gardening, reading, and traveling.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Lynn; his four children, Nicole (Richard) Christoph, Andrea Bukacek, Erik Bukacek (fiancée, Kirstin), James Bukacek (fiancée, Brittni); his grandchildren, Annika, Remington, and Aubrey; his mother, Bernice Bukacek; sister, Cheryl (Jerry) Isen; brother, Andrew Bukacek; mother-in-law, Charlotte McManus; other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James Bukacek and sister, Susan Bukacek. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a leader, visionary, conversationalist, by his children as a loving Father, and grand-children as “Papa”.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Monday at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to STX Disorders are suggested on behalf of his grandson.
