The cause of a Sunday morning fire on Racine’s south side that caused almost $40,000 in damage remains under investigation.

Racine firefighters were called to a house in the 2000 block of West Lawn at 7:14 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor called 911 when they saw smoke. There was no one home at the time.

When crews arrived, they found smoke coming out the back of the home and located the source of the fire in the middle of the house. The flames were extinguished in a matter of minutes, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
