Sister Marie Imelda Baumgartner (1)Sister Marie Imelda Baumgartner, O.P., 93, passed away at Kenosha Estates Living and Care Center on Tuesday May 10, 2016.

Marcella Ellen was born Dec. 20, 1922 to Lawrence and Hedwig (Hattie) (nee: Beier) Baumgartner in Warren, MI. On Aug. 30, 1937 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1940 she was given the religious name Sister Marie Imelda. She professed her first vows in 1942 and her final vows in 1948.

Sister Marie Imelda spent many years in service to others in teaching and chaplaincy work. She began her ministry in 1942 at St. Rita of Casio School, Racine, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Mary School,  Janesville; St. Andrew Catholic School, Knowles; Holy Cross Catholic School, Kaukauna; St. Mary’s School, Kenosha; St. John Catholic School, South Milwaukee; Holy Name Catholic School, Sacred Heart Catholic School, St. Rose Catholic School, St. Mary’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital, Racine; St. Catherine Hospital and Aurora Medical Center, Kenosha. She also served in Michigan. She became a resident at Kenosha Estates Living and Care Center, Kenosha in Oct. 2010.

Sister Marie Imelda is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her sisters Mary Mikolowski, and Imelda Rose Connell; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers Anthony, Joseph, Mello and infant brother Vincent Baumgartner and sisters Catherine Bukari, Cecilia Ann Wiegand and Sister Margaret Baumgartner, O.P.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the  have been suggested.
