The Washington Park Panthers boys basketball team will take on the Milwaukee Marquette Hilltoppers tonight on the hardwood at Case High School for the WIAA sectional semi-final.
Park is ranked fourth in the state by the Associated Press, and Marquette is listed seventh. The teams have similar records; 22-2 and 21-3, respectively, and Park Coach Jim Betker told The Journal Times he expects the game to be a tough one.
“I expect a battle,” he is quoted as saying. “They have some size and good athletes who are fundamentally sound. We have to take care of the ball and execute. The team that makes the fewest mistakes should get through.”
Sports writer Robb Luehr notes that while Marquette fields a team of juniors and seniors, Park has a more diverse age range of four freshman, a sophomore and two seniors. Five Panthers average 10 points or more per game while the Hilltoppers have two players who score more than 10 points per game and four total with averages of 9.2 points or more.
Tip off is at 7 p.m. in the J.I. Case High School fieldhouse. The winner could face No. 2 Milwaukee Riverside or unranked Milwaukee Vincent Saturday at West Allis Central.
