A 13-year-old boy is in custody after Mount Pleasant police say he stole a car from the Porcaro Ford dealership on Washington Avenue, led police on a high-speed chase and then crashed the car into the median near West Road.
In a written release, MPPD Sgt. Jason Vaccaro writes that officers were on patrol when they encountered several vehicles driving fast on Washington Avenue, some without headlights. Several squads immediately went into pursuit, but the chase was terminated for safety reasons.
A short time later, police were told about a car that crashed into the median on Highway 20 near West Road and that it was on fire. Officers put out the flames using extinguishers in their squads and subsequently arrested a 13-year-old boy after he tried to flee the scene on foot.
Investigators determined the boy and several other subjects took the cars from Porcaro and caused a fair amount of damage to the business while doing so.
The boy remains in custody in Racine County but also has warrants out of Milwaukee County. Because he is a juvenile, his name is not being released.
