Mount Pleasant police say two men – one of whom remains at large – jumped out of a hotel window Tuesday to avoid arrest on drug charges, and officers recovered some $14,000 in marijuana.
According to a press release from MPPD, Joseph Brumfield, 36, and Brandon Jones, 30, both of Racine, were in a room at America’s Best Value Inn & Suites Hotel, 5419 Durand Avenue, when employees called police to report the smell of marijuana. When officers arrived, Dispatch advised them two men had broken out a second floor window and jumped to the ground below.
Police entered the room and discovered a large amount of marijuana with a street value of around $14,000 along with a large, undisclosed amount of cash.
Meanwhile, witnesses told officers they saw Brumfield and Jones flee eastbound on foot and that one of the men had a limp. A canvass of the area turned up Brumfield near the Durand Avenue Burger King, but Jones was not located.
Brumfield remains in the Racine County Jail facing two felony counts of bail jumping, one felony count each of maintaining a drug trafficking place and possession with the intent to deliver. He was assigned a $5,000 cash bond Wednesday at his initial appearance and could face up to 25-1/2 years in jail and/or up to $55,000 in fines.
Brumfield will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing Sept. 11.
Police are still looking for Jones. Anyone with information about his whereabouts can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (262) 636-9330, via web at www.racine.crimestoppersweb.com, or by sending a text message to CRIMES (274637) and typing TIP417.
