Racine police say a 20-year-old man is facing felony theft charges after he admitted to stealing around $9,000 in jewelry from a relative.
Alex Vinson was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single felony count of theft. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, officers were called Wednesday to a home for a report of theft. When police arrived, a man said he heard noise coming from the dryer and when he went to investigate found a pair of diamond earrings bouncing around. The man asked a woman if the earrings were hers, and she confirmed they were.
Police say the couple confronted Vinson about why the earrings were in the dryer with his clothes, and he admitted to taking them with the intention of pawning them for cash. When the man asked Vinson if he’d taken other jewelry, he denied doing so but then said he’d been stealing from the woman for weeks and pawning the pieces at local shops.
The woman checked her jewelry box and discovered a number of gold necklaces, rings, bracelets and diamonds were missing, the complaint reads. All told, Vinson is suspected of taking between $7,000 and $9,000 in jewelry and pawning it, using the money, he said, for smartphones, video games and “other things he needed.”
Officers say Vinson identified Ancient Horizons and Zales as two locations inside Regency Mall were he pawned some of the pieces. Both stores have video surveillance showing Vinson completing transactions with the woman’s jewelry.
Vinson remains in the Racine County Jail on a $3,000 cash bond. He will next be in court on Dec. 30 for his preliminary hearing.
