The man who lead police on a short high-speed chase last week down 6th Street before crashing into the grass at the base of Holy Communion Lutheran Church was four times over the legal limit for drunk driving.

Michael Walker, 31, of Racine was charged Friday with one felony count of trying to flee a police officer and one misdemeanor count each of operating with intoxicated – second offense and operating a motor vehicle with revoked. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and/or up to $13,600 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, Walker was driving west on 6th Street when police observed him drive through a temporary stop sign at Racine Street. When officers activated their lights and siren, Walker accelerated and sped away from police. He attempted to take the turn from 6th Street onto Kinzie when instead he lost control of the car and crashed into the grass at the base of the hill of Holy Communion.

Police say Walker exited the vehicle and because they were unsure if he would flee the scene or if he was armed, they pulled their weapons and ordered him to the ground. After he was cuffed, Walker apologized for making an illegal turn and was informed he was being stopped because he didn’t stop for a stop sign.

Walker blew a .328 when officers administered a portable breath test, the complaint reads. Because his blood alcohol was too high to book him into the Racine County Jail, police transported Walker to Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s where they performed field sobriety tests that he failed.

Walker remains in the Racine County Jail on a $250 cash bond. He was also assigned a $2,000 signature bond and will next be in court April 13 for his preliminary hears.
