Racine police say a 48-year-old man is facing felony burglary charges after he broke into a dead woman’s home and stole a variety of items valued at over $500.

Marvin Brown, of Oshkosh, was charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of burglary to a dwelling. If convicted, he faces up to 12-1/2 years and/or up to $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint against him, a man called police after he observed Brown entering the home that belonged to the man’s deceased grandmother. The man told officers that he went to check on the house because he suspected people were illegally gaining entrance.

Police say when the man arrived at the home, he took a seat on the porch and a man – later identified as Brown – came around from the back and yelled that he was being chased by two armed men. The man got in his car and pretended to leave the area but instead pulled around the corner where he could see Brown climb a ladder to the second floor and emerge a short time later with two, full plastic bags.

Brown remains in the Racine County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond. He will next be in court Aug. 31 for his preliminary hearing.
