Mount Pleasant police say a 35-year-old Zion man is facing charges after he walked out of Walmart with a Dyson vacuum cleaner.

Anthony JettAnthony Jett was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of bail jumping and one misdemeanor count each of retail theft and bail jumping. If convicted, he faces up to 7-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $30,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called at 12:55 p.m. July 12 to Walmart on Highway 11 in Mount Pleasant for a report of a retail theft by a man with a little girl in a stroller. Store security said the man – later identified as Jett – walked around the store with the stroller before making his way to the vacuum cleaners. He selected a Dyson V6 Slim hand-held vacuum cleaner and placed in the basket under the stroller before walking past the the registers and out the first set of doors leading to the parking lot.

Police say store employees stopped Jett and he handed them the vacuum cleaner, walked out of the store and left in a four-door sedan. The value of the vacuum cleaner was $279.

Jett is also accused of similar thefts from stores in Vernon Hills, IL, and in Kenosha where he was out of jail on bond and ordered to not commit any more crimes, the complaint reads. He remains in the Racine County Jail on a $400 cash bond. Jett will next be in court August 4 for his pre-trial conference.
