Mount Pleasant police say a 22-year-old man is charged with child sex assault charges after having sex with a 13-year-old girl he met through a dating app.

Salvador Escobedo, of Mount Pleasant, was charged Friday with a single felony count of repeated sexual assault of the same child. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison and/or up to $100,000 in fines. A charged of repeat child sex assault is determined if there are three reported incidents of 1st or 2nd degree sexual assault.

According to the criminal complaint, police on August 5 were asked to observe a forensic interview with a 13-year-old girl at the Racine County Child Advocacy Center. During the conversation, the girl said she met Escobedo on or about June 23 through the MeetMe app and did list her real age in her profile. Still, Escobedo arranged to pick her up and took her to the lakefront in Racine where they kissed and then drove up to the lighthouse before going back to Escobedo’s home near Regency Mall.

Police say the girl and Escobedo watched TV and she told him she wasn’t sure if she wanted to have sex because of their age difference. Escobedo told her it was okay and initiated sexual intercourse with the girl. There were three additional encounters following the first incident.

Racine County Court Commissioner Alice Rudebusch assigned Escobedo a $75,000 cash bond at his initial appearance Friday and ordered him to submit a DNA sample and to not have any contact with the girl. He will next be in court August 12 for his preliminary hearing.
