A Racine man is accused of attempted homicide after he stabbed his mother with a steak knife. Following the incident, he was also caught walking around naked on LaSalle Street on Friday.
Terrell Banks, 23, was charged Monday by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, domestic abuse assessments, and mayhem. If convicted, Banks faces up to 100 years in prison and/or fines up to $100,000.
According to the criminal complaint, officers with the Racine Police Department were called to the Dollar Store, 3900 Erie St., after a woman told staff she had been stabbed by Banks. The stabbing had taken place inside her apartment at 3931 Green St. Injured, the woman walked to the store looking for help.
Banks was found naked and was taken into custody after being found walking in the 2700 block of LaSalle St. He allegedly stabbed his mother nine times, including in the head, eyes, arm, and side.
The woman told police she had just come home when she called out to Banks. He grabbed what she thought was a cell phone and ran toward her saying nothing. He struck her repeatedly and the woman then realized her son was stabbing her with a knife. She fought back and got the knife away from Banks.
After the altercation, he seemed to pass out. With the knife in hand, the woman fled on foot and knocked on the door of a neighboring apartment but no one answered. So she went to the store to get help.
Banks was taken to the hospital. During an interview with the police “spoke very quietly,” cried, and was “visibly upset” while he admitted to attacking his mother, the complaint reads.
He explained to the police that he had smoked marijuana about 45 minutes before the incident and “knew it had put him beyond his ‘comfort zone’ as he became paranoid. He didn’t believe there were any other drugs mixed with the marijuana, but he had never had “such a paranoid reaction.”
The reaction caused him to grab a steak knife. He then sat down to meditate and left his door open. Voices in his head told him that “someone wanted to rape him.”
“He believed if anyone came into the apartment they were there for that purpose,” he told the police. “A short time later his mother walked in and he believed she was there to rape him.”
Stabbing her, she screamed. Banks told police that he did not know how many times he stabbed his mother.
“Banks advised he was clothed when he left the home and began walking ‘toward the sun,’” the complaint reads. “Banks stated he felt if he stopped walking he would get raped so he continued to walk. Banks did recall taking off his clothes, stating he took them off near the school because he believed he was ‘about to fly.’”
