After strangling and threatening to kill the mother of his child in January, a Racine man was charged Monday with misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct, with domestic abuse enhancers.

A 24-year-old assaulted the mother of his child over a dispute about who would claim their daughter on their income taxes.

While they could not agree, the woman told police the disagreement was civil. He allegedly surprised her while she was packing a bag of clothing for their daughter by beginning to strangle her.

He was shouting that he was going to kill her while he choked hear near the point of losing consciousness, according to the criminal complaint.

The woman threw him to the floor and screamed for help hoping a neighbor would hear. He attempted to continue strangling her, but she fought back until he gave up and left.
