Mount Pleasant police say a 53-year-old Racine woman stole 26 steaks from Malicki’s Piggly Wiggly on Washington Avenue and then tried to turn herself in at the Racine County Jail.
According to the criminal complaint, store security alerted officers on Sept. 21 to a theft on Sept. 19 of 26 steaks and a number of miscellaneous items by a woman – later identified as Kile – wearing jeans and a Chicago Bears sweatshirt. On surveillance video the woman is seen walking past the registers and out the door before getting into a green Honday Odyssey minivan and leaving the area.
Police say they were called back to the store on Sept. 24 because security staff had received tips about Kile’s identity because she’d been overheard bragging about getting away with the steaks. When officers went to her home to question her, she wasn’t there, but a neighbor provided her cell phone number.
Officers got Kile on the phone and asked where she was, the complaint reads. Kile responded that she was on her way to jail because she had “made a mistake” by stealing the steaks and other items from the Piggly Wiggly on Washington Avenue. Kile asked police which door she should use at RCJ, but officers asked to wait for them instead.
When police arrived, they say she provided details that matched what they’d seen on store surveillance video so officers took her into custody. Kile said she’d stolen the food because she didn’t have any money to buy groceries.
Kile remains in the Racine County Jail on a $200 cash bond. She will next be in court Oct. 15 for her preliminary hearing.
