Mount Pleasant police said they found a woman who said she was six months pregnant using heroin in a grocery store bathroom on Wednesday.
Police were called to Piggly Wiggly, 5201 Washington Ave., for a report of a shoplifting in progress. There were two suspects, a man and a woman, who were both in the women’s bathroom, according to court records.
Store staff said they had concealed stolen items inside a yellow Dollar Tree bag.
An officer went into the bathroom, and saw two sets of feet in the handicapped stall. The door was unlocked, and after opening the door the officer saw a woman pulling a needle from her right hand area, as if she had been injecting herself with heroin.
Both people were put into handcuffs and searched.
Inside the woman’s purse were four needles, one with liquid inside, and several other pieces of suspected drug paraphernalia.
Both parties appeared lethargic and were slow to respond.
They were placed into separate squad cars.
While being taken to jail, the woman said she is six months pregnant and addicted to heroin. She said they had been trying to get a drug to help them quit, but they can’t get into a clinic. She didn’t want to go through withdrawal and said heroin is cheaper than the drug to help with the addiction.
Both are charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and retail theft.
