Racine County Eye, an independent online news source, is looking for an experienced journalist for a freelance position to cover Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant.

We pride ourselves in developing stories that start conversations in our communities. Started by veteran journalists, our focus is to help our readers — ALWAYS. We don’t charge for our news and we are entirely supported by advertising, events, and sponsorships. As a result, our audience is diverse and in November over 72,000 people visited our site.

The opportunity:

You’ll cover two communities: Sturtevant and Mount Pleasant that collectively have about 35,000 people. There’s a lot of development and manufacturing happening here. Attending municipal meetings, you’ll write from the meetings and receive criminal complaints. You’ll have the opportunity to write up one to three stories a week.

But here’s what we need:

The ideal candidate will need to be detail oriented, have a critical eye on key issues facing the community, and be deadline driven. Adherence to AP style and best practices in journalism is a must.

Here’s what makes a kick ass freelancer:

  1. A tough skin. We’re not shy. You shouldn’t be either.
  2. A no excuses attitude. You meet deadlines and know how to communicate effectively to earn the trust of your sources.
  3. Your writing is accurate, well-balanced, credible and conversation starting.
  4. Bachelor’s degree in journalism.
  5. Reliable transportation.

What we pay: $50 /per municipal story. Interested? Email your resume and three clips to Denise Lockwood at racinecountyeye@gmail.com.
