RACINE – Racine firefighters were called at 10 p.m. Friday to the 3300 block of Kearney Avenue for a report of a structure fire. Working smoke alarms alerted residents of the fire that caused $90,000 in damages.

When crews arrived, they saw fire and smoke at the front entrance of the building that extended into the attic.

Prior to RFD’s arrival, a resident used at least two fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the flames. Firefighters from Engine 5 had the fire under control in 15 minutes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Residents heard the smoke alarms and escaped the building. One person was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Daylight Saving Time just began on March 13, 2022. A smart recommendation is to change the batteries in all smoke alarms when we “spring forward” and “fall back” to make sure they are in working order should a fire occur.
