The Racine Fire Department is investigating how matches may have started a fire in a south side garage that caused $5,000 in damage.
RFD Lt. Scott Sorce in a press release confirmed that crews were called at 4:07 p.m. to the 1200 block of Illinois for a report of smoke coming from the garage. Firefighters extinguished the flames in a few minutes and estimate the damage at about $5,000.
Children in the home noticed the smoke and called 9-1-1. No one was injured.
“(They) safely waited for fire crews to arrive,” the release reads.
Once the fire was out, the property was turned back over to the tenants and property management company.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone who has information about the fire can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (262) 636-9330 or by texting RACS with the tip to CRIMES (274637).
