Sturtevant trustees will talk Tuesday about implementing an annual parking pass at the Amtrak depot where only daily and monthly passes are currently available.
Racine resident Jennifer Torres visited the Sturtevant Village Board meeting this week to ask the board to rethink their decision to raise monthly rates from $60 to $80 per month. She relies on Amtrak to get to work in Milwaukee and said the monthly pass hike would make it more expensive for her to use the train instead of drive.
“Raising the monthly rate will make it too expensive for me to take the train, and I’d rather not have to drive,” she said. “But, I wonder if you’d be willing to reopen your discussion about raising the monthly rate and to include an annual pass as well.”
The Glenview, IL, train station, Torres pointed out in a spreadsheet she shared with trustees, offers its residents an annual parking rate of $300, a considerable savings over monthly and/or daily parking rates for those who take advantage of it.
President Steve Jansen agreed that the idea has merit.
“We’ve never explored a yearly fee, but it’s a good idea,” he admitted.
Members of the finance committee will discuss the matter at the next Continual Committee meeting Tuesday started at 6 p.m. at Village Hall, 2801 89th Street. Call (262) 886-7200.
