A Racine woman appeared in court Wednesday, nearly five months after Pick n Save said she stole $187.41 in merchandise from a Mount Pleasant store.

Sarah Carvajal was charged with misdemeanor retail theft in September, but this week was the first time she was in court on the charges. She is out of custody on a signature bond.

According to the criminal complaint, a store manager reported that a woman went into the store at 3:56 p.m. Sept. 1. She selected a bottle of Malibu, a bottle of Rumchata and two bottles of Bacardi Limon. From the deli, she selected four containers of sushi, two bags of rolls and a sheet cake.

The woman then left without paying for the merchandise, the complaint states.

The manager followed her out of the store and took a photograph of the car she got into, according to the complaint. Police used the vehicle license plate to find Carvajal.

She told police she had been drinking, and agreed to go to the police department. Police reported she was “very emotional” and said she was brought to Racine from California several years ago, by a man who has since left her. She said she doesn’t have a job or income and that she was “just hungry.”

Carvajal told police she took the alcohol so she could sell it, and the cake because it was a neighbor girl’s birthday and she wanted to give her a cake because the family doesn’t have much money.
