FRANKLIN – A possible retail theft in Franklin on Friday night ended in a high-speed chase through Racine and Sturtevant – and numerous criminal charges pending against the 30-year-old driver.
According to a press release issued by the Racine County Sheriff’s Department:
Police in Franklin advised officers in Racine County they needed assistance stopping a vehicle that had fled following a retail theft at the Sendik’s Food Market.
A Racine County Sheriff’s Department deputy spotted the vehicle as it traveled on South Sylvania Avenue, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed through a construction area. Police terminated the pursuit as the vehicle continued toward a populated area near Highway 20.
From there, a Sturtevant officer located the vehicle and also attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled again. The chase continued through residential lawns at a high rate of speed before it ran out of gas on Northwestern Avenue at Nicholson Road.
A felony traffic stop was conducted, and seven occupants were located inside, including a 14-year-old child. Police took the driver into custody for several counts of recklessly endangering safety and knowingly fleeing and eluding a traffic officer.
Two other occupants were taken into custody on outstanding warrants. The release states that additional charges are pending from the city of Franklin and village of Sturtevant police departments.
