A Racine teenager is behind bars after police say he was riding a motorcycle without the proper lights and led them on a chase.

Frankie Ortiz, 18, was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Monday with one felony count of fleeing a police officer. If convicted, he faces up to 3-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, police at 4:08 p.m. Saturday observed Ortiz riding a motorcycle without proper lighting and without visible registration. They initiated a traffic stop just past the intersection of Marquette and Mound, but Ortiz didn’t stop as expected.

Officers say Ortiz took off, heading west on State before turning north on Marquette and continuing on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. He finally came to a stop at Hamilton and Marquette when a separate squad car cut him off.

Police commanded Ortiz to get off his bike and get down on the sidewalk. He was taken into custody without further incident, the complaint reads, but he did tell officers while they were searching him that he was just trying to get home.

Ortiz remains in the Racine County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond and will next be in court Nov. 10 for his preliminary hearing.
