Mount Pleasant trustees Monday unanimously approved raises for village police officers as well as a borrowing package to pay for road projects and the Highway V utility project.

According to a memorandum of understanding presented during the board meeting at Village Hall, Mount Pleasant police officers will get an 8 percent salary bump over the next three years:

  • 1% as of Jan. 1, 2016 and on July 1
  • 1.5% on Jan. 1, 2017 and another 1.5% on July 1, 2017
  • 1.5% on Jan. 1, 2018 and 1.5% on July 1, 2018

The police union still needs to sign off on the proposed contract put forth during the village board meeting.

In other news, trustees also gave the nod to borrowing $4,190,000; $1.9 million for various road resurfacing projects, $100,000 for capital expenses and $2.1 million for the Highway V utility project.

Dawn Gunderson of Ehlers & Associates, the village’s financial advisor, advised the board to group the borrowing together to take advantage of low interest rates. She warned against taking the Highway V project out of the package because not only do interest rates rise, but trustees would then avoid extra underwriting fees as well.

Trustee Gary Feest brought up the village’s tight budget and questioned how the bottom line could accommodate another large debt payment. He seemed poised to vote against it, but after reassurances from both Gunderson and Lead Accountant Vicki Matter, he voted “aye.”

“We took into account anticipated growth in the village’s tax base to help offset these payments,” Gunderson said.
