RACINE – Malicki’s Piggly Wiggly, located at 5201 Washington Ave, is hosting a Humanitarian Relief Drive with other local organizations to assist those in need due to the Russian invasion in Ukraine. They are seeking donations from community members to support their initiative.

Russia is continuing to invade Ukraine, causing civilians to suffer. Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes, flee their country and seek safe shelter. This includes several hundred thousand Ukrainian refugees fleeing to Poland. Now more than ever, these individuals are relying on humanitarian assistance and aid.

Fundraising organizer Makayla Mackiewicz said, “As of right now Union Grove Elementary School and Kansasville Grade School are participating. Athletico Physical Therapy in Union Grove, Malicki’s Piggly Wiggly on Washington Avenue in Racine, and the Kenosha Literacy Council are drop-off sites for the drive as well. Additionally, all AJ Sports Collectables stores are donating 25% of all hockey sales to the Ukraine Relief Fund.”

This relief fundraiser is a part of a larger fundraiser that is being hosted by The Green Bay Ukrainian-American community. They are partnering with Meest Chicago Shipping LLC to send humanitarian aid and basic military supplies to Ukraine.

Mackiewicz will be picking up items from the drop-off locations on March 11. She will be transporting the donated items to Green Bay. From there, items will be transported by volunteer drivers to deliver donated goods to Chicago. Items will be distributed to Poland and those in Ukraine.

“Organizing this drive is extremely important to me because I have family and friends in Poland,” said Mackiewicz, “which is one of the neighboring countries that is actively aiding Ukraine.”
