The Sturtevant fireworks are in very real danger of not going off in 2017 if raffle sales don’t pick up in time to draw a winner at the Dec. 3 Santa Dinner.

At a committee meeting earlier this month, Trustee Michelle Duchow told village board members that sales are sluggish, and the fireworks committee is very much facing the potential of not putting on a show next summer.

“If we don’t get more sales, the fireworks might not happen because we won’t have the money,” she said.

Duchow is the chair of the committee. So far, only about 100 of the 600 available tickets have been sold.

After canceling the fireworks in 2015 because of a lack of both funding and volunteer support, Trustee Carrie Harbach and Village President Steve Jansen launched its first fireworks raffle as a 50/50 jackpot to support a 2016 show. There were 300 tickets available for $100 each, giving supporters a 1:300 shot at winning $15,000 if all the tickets were sold.

By the time the winning ticket was drawn in September 2015, 291 tickets had been sold, and winner Chuck Beth took home $15,000. The remaining funds went to the fireworks and funded the majority of the cost of the show. Additional fundraising events like the annual mostaccioli dinner in December 2015 and the Easter pancake breakfast last April filled in the blanks.

The raffle to fund the 2017 fireworks are $50 each and come with potential prizes of $10,000, $3,000 and $2,000 if all 600 tickets are sold.

Harbach, former chair of the fireworks, said the board is hoping to sell half the tickets by the Dec. 3 drawing but may also consider just pulling the plug and reimbursing anyone who bought a ticket.

She also mentioned during that same committee meeting that DeRango’s at 6100 Washington Avenue was seriously considering pulling its support from the annual dinner if the fireworks next year are a no-go. Restaurant owners donate the mostaccioli and salad for the dinner, often making multiple food runs between their location and Village Hall the night of the event.

Assuming the committee can fund the 2017 show, fireworks will launch from a back ball diamond at Fireman’s Park on July 3.
